Friday Art: The Experience of Colour Astrazione Oggetiva
The Estorick Collection, 39a Canonbury Square, London N1

In the late 1940 American dealer and collector Eric Estorick discovered contemporary Italian art, travelling to Italy on several occasions and befriending major artists of his day.

By 1993 he had accumulated an internationally famous collection of Italian art and sculpture from 1890 to the 1950s, particularly strong in the work of the Italian Futurists – Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Luigi Russolo and Gino Severini. Other artists represented include Amedeo Modigliani, Georgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi.

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art is truly a mind-expanding experience,  is a must see London attraction for art lovers. Situated just off Upper Street, it is housed in a beautiful Georgian building and is the perfect site for a relaxing afternoon taking in sculpture and Futurist paintings - the only art gallery in the country to focus on the importance of modern Italian art to European art and culture; the gallery also holds regular workshops for both adults and children around the subject and themes discussed in the permanent exhibitions.

The Experience of Colour Astrazione Oggetiva is the current exhibition exploring a little-known movement in Italian painting, but one that nevertheless represents an important phase in the evolution of abstract art in post-war Italy with colour as the focal point of the artistic practice, exploring its optical and perceptual effects. The exhibition is visually stunning, vibrant and, if you let yourself go and float, emotionally intense.

You must hurry though: the gallery closes from August 2016 until January 2017 for refurbishment. So, what are you waiting for: get a ticket and go.
