In the third film in the new Star Trek franchise, the USS Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
It is a crisis once again, the ship and crew are attacked by a wave of unknown aliens, which leaves them stranded on a planet they know nothing about, and the Entreprise is destroyed.
How will the crew be able to find their way off the planet and back on course?
The special effects is worlds away from that of the original but the costumes are in a colour palette that provides familiarity with the 1960s. Humour, not the plot, is the driving force of this movie,with gags tending towards the nerdy, self-referential variety that best connects with the fan base particularly those who love the original television series (Simon Pegg co-scripted the screenplay).
After the successful appearance of Benedict Cumberbatch in the second film of this franchise, the baddie is once again a Brit , the unrecognisable Idris Elba.

Now I know that, as the Entreprise explores the Galaxy, it encounters alien species left, right and centre and that they might not be exactly always attractive. Nevertheless I would have preferred not just enjoying Elba's performance but also have something nice to look at (and he definitely is, well without the alien make up).
Overall this is a Star Trek movie for old and new fans alike, a summer blockbuster; loved it (yes, I am a trekkie).
